We continue with our research seminars on the 25th of February, 2022, 5 pm Tbilisi time with the talk Tiflis as an example of Imperial Modernization
Abstract:
Medine Rasimgil will give a presentation related to her doctoral thesis entitled ‘Tiflis as an example of Imperial Modernization’ funded by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK). According to the theory of multiple modernities, while the institutional framework of the experience of modernity is common in different modernization processes, its cultural framework is characterized by plurality displaying diversity. The modernization experiences of non-Western and non-colonial empires such as the Russian Empire also contribute to this pluralism with their specific conditions and processes. Western elements that entered the socio-cultural system of the Russian Empire created an unstable attraction and reorganized the imperial system. Unlike the central cities of the Russian Empire, the peripheral cities, where modernization processes are carried out with colonial-like hybrid structures, purposes a new field of discussion. Therefore, this research aims to contribute to 19th-century urban history studies by evaluating the changes in the physical structure of Tbilisi in the context of the actors and dynamics of the imperial modernization processes. In her presentation, Medine Rasimgil will present her research objectives and study plan which is envisaged to conduct in different institutions in Tbilisi like Georgian National Archives and the Georgian National Parliamentary Library.
