Esma Berikishvili and Mariam Shalvashvili, doctoral students of social and cultural anthropology at Ilia State University, presented the results of their doctoral studies at the international conference organized by the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA) on July 23-26 in Barcelona. Esma Berikishvili presented her paper “Disrupted Waves: Undoing Maritime Livelihoods and State Reforms in Post-Soviet Poti,” and Mariam Shalvashvili’s presentation was titled “Doubting (the) State: the Political and Affective Role of Mistrust and Conspiracy Theories in Pankisi, Georgia.” Esma and Mariam received the European Association of Social Anthropologists funding to participate in the conference. Esma Berikishvili also obtained the conference funding from the Max Weber Foundation. After presenting their research, PhD students were offered the opportunity to co-author special issues of anthropology journals. The conference organized by the European Association of Social Anthropologists is held biennially at different universities, and it is one of the largest and most distinguished conferences in social and cultural anthropology. More than 2500 delegates participated in the conference this year. The conference includes hundreds of research presentation panels, workshops, and roundtable discussions and often features some of the most prominent researchers in anthropology.
