On May 16 at 17:00, the research seminar titled “Informal Governance, De-Europeanization, and the Return of Political Protest in Georgia” will be held at Book House Ligamus (32 Ilia Chavchavadze Avenue). The event is organized by the Research Center for Anthropology and the Doctoral Program in Anthropology at Ilia State University.
Speaker Lika Tsuladze will explore how the process of Europeanization in Georgia has become a context for broad waves of political protest, especially concerning issues such as environmental protection, education reform, and women’s and minority rights. The presentation will discuss developments since the first constitutional change in 2012, the strengthening of informal governance, and the emergence of new waves of protest mobilization in the context of the country’s de-Europeanization. It will also draw parallels with similar protest movements in Central and Eastern European countries (Hungary, Poland, North Macedonia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Ukraine). The seminar will attract not only researchers in anthropology but also those interested in political science, sociology, and Eastern European studies.
Lika Tsuladze is an Associate Professor in Sociology at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Tbilisi State University. Since 2016, she has served as Executive Director of the Center for Social Sciences.
